Changes in the colony
Emperor
Most penguin species take turns warming the egg, but it's up
to the Emperor penguin dads to do all the work once the egg is laid. The male stands with the egg on his feet
under a brood pouch (for warmth). He
does this for up to 9 weeks, without food, waiting for the chick to hatch. During this time, the male may lose up to
half its body weight.
Galapagos
One of the main problems for Galapagos penguins is keeping
cool which they do by spending much of their time swimming and hunting for food
in cold water. On land, they hold their flippers out to help the heat escape
their bodies and to protect their feet from getting sunburned.
Chin Strap
Bold, Noisy and Gregarious, they are the most likely to
fight other penguins
Rock Hopper
Small, aggressive, crested, they jump from rock to
rock. Although they used to be hunted,
they are now protected.
Humbolt
Gregarious in the breeding colonies but are less so at sea.
Adelie
Social birds and stealing pebbles from neighboring birds'
nests is a favorite pastime.
Gentoo
Often stay close to the nest and behave like sedentary
birds.
