Fractured family

We had a lesson in RS today that gave me pause. The instructor talked about the links and connections of family, which of course led to a discussion about the after life, and family history. One woman talked about how when her parents divorced, they cancelled their temple sealing, for her it broke the chain. It took awhile for her to figure out how she connected after that. Another woman said that we are all connected and will be connected eternally, but perhaps with different connections than we have here on earth.
Some families are fractured through divorce (as in my husbands family). Ours is fractured by the very way we came together. We have children of different birth parents - each with their own set. They have little if any contact with birth families - some more than others. It's been a challenge to develop unity in our family. And when it comes to family history, it's complicated. What lines do we follow and where does all the extended family come in?
To add to this I recently finished the last two books in the Tending Roses Series which discussed adult children searching to understand how they fit.

So I'm thinking, it might be beneficial to come up with some symbol for our family that recognizes the complexity of our family, while unifying it at the same time. Some project - visual.... I'm thinking.
A tree? A doillie? Maybe a family quilt? A family book? I'm thinking.

You're not fractured, you're a patchwork quilt! Somedays, perhaps a crazy quilt :-).

When it comes to which line to follow, trust the promise in Malachi to guide each one individually as to which line they will have a connection to. I know that sounds like an overly simple answer, however the more research I do the more I feel that connection to my family. Consider also that all the other keys to this dispensation were received wherever the prophet happened to be, the final keys, the sealing powers, could only be given in a temple.
